This year is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the  Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the nation's longest-running educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts. The program has an impressive legacy of being the first to acknowledge creative talent and is today's largest source of scholarships for creative teens. Notable alumni of the awards (who were themselves honored in middle school or high school) include director Ken Burns, artist Andy Warhol, artist Charles White, author Truman Capote, artist Timothy H. Lee, photographer Richard Avedon, author Sylvia Plath, actor/director Robert Redford, artist Kay WalkingStick, actor John Lithgow, sculptor Luis Jiménez, and National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman. Jurors look for works that exemplify originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
