#FacultyFriday Faculty News

This week’s Faculty Friday is another Field veteran and one of our incredible math teachers! Jake Hirsch has been teaching at Field since 2004. He’s a Virginia native and attended the University of Virginia. Jake is a proud dad and loves coaching his daughters in softball, watching sports, and playing games. Keep reading to learn about a crazy adventure he had while on an Intersession trip at Field.

Where did you grow up?

Reston, Virginia

What is your alma mater?

University of Virginia

What is your favorite book or podcast?

I listen to way way too many podcasts. My favorite is probably Plain English with Derek Thompson. He and his team are great researchers and he's really skilled as an interviewer.

What is something that people at The Field School might not know about you?

I've repelled into a canyon once (pictured). This was on an Intersession trip with two former Field teachers and students who are all now in college. Intersession trips aren't just for student growth. I was scared out of my mind, but I did it and it was fun. Not sure if I'd do it again though.

What hobbies do you have outside of Field?

Coaching my daughters in softball, watching sports, puzzles and games like Sudoku and NYT Connections.

What is the first concert you ever attended?

No idea, probably a kids artist or a folk artist that my dad loved. My first one as an adult was either U2 or Tori Amos.

If you could share one piece of advice with your younger self, what would it be?

Travel more. I traveled quite a bit, but I'd tell myself to travel even more when I was younger.

Who inspires you and why?

My parents. They taught me to do what is right and encourage me to be a good person.

What do you love most about working at The Field School?

The people. I love coming to work with smart and energetic and interesting people, both co-workers and students.
