Happy Friday!! Spring Break is almost here – but first, we have one more Faculty Friday. This week we’re highlighting one of our wonderful English teachers. Jake Philbin-Cross teaches upper school students at Field. He’s originally from Boston and graduated from Connecticut College. Jake is a proud Boston sports fan and he also plays a lot of sports in his spare time, including soccer. Keep reading to find out who inspires him the most.
Where did you grow up?
Boston
What is your alma mater?
Connecticut College
What is your favorite book or podcast?
Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
What hobbies do you have outside of Field?
I play a lot of rec sports, mainly soccer, but also volleyball and softball. I love hiking in the area and enjoy a good video game.
What is the first concert you ever attended?
The Fray (my mom made me go). My favorite was Jay-Z!
Who inspires you and why?
Both of my parents do, mainly because they've worked their whole lives at organizations that attempt to help other people. They are passionate and self-sacrificing, even as they move towards the end of their careers.
If you could share one piece of advice with your younger self, what would it be?
I think I'd tell young me to work towards being excellent at something. I feel like I tried to do a bunch of things to the best of my abilities, which was important, but I think it would have been great to learn early what it takes to excel at a certain skill or talent.
What do you love most about working at The Field School?
I enjoy the unique personality of this school. I think that schools can sometimes blend together, demonstrating the same qualities or characteristics. Field stands out as a place that knows itself and has a student body with a personality not found elsewhere. It's engaging, challenging, and a joy to be a part of.
