This week we’re highlighting one of our incredible math teachers for Faculty Friday! Susanna Stossel teaches middle school students at Field and she’s also an advisor. She’s originally from Claremont, California and attended Tufts University near Boston. She says if she wasn’t a teacher she would be a marine biologist! Keep reading to find out the one piece of advice she would give her younger self.
Where did you grow up?
Claremont, California
What is your alma mater?
Hotchkiss, Tufts University
What is your favorite book or podcast?
Choosing a favorite book is so hard! For non-fiction I have recently been recommending Middle School Superpowers to anyone working with or parenting these awesome young humans. As far as fiction goes, I couldn't name a favorite but I have reread both Love in the Time of Cholera and Death Comes for the Archbishop several times.
What is something that people at The Field School might not know about you?
If I wasn't a teacher I probably would have been a marine biologist.
What hobbies do you have outside of Field?
Knitting, running, bird-watching, jigsaw puzzles
What is the first concert you ever attended?
10,000 Maniacs - but first I had to convince my mom that the band was not very accurately named.
Who inspires you and why?
My parents for the way they shaped my worldview; my own kids because it has been amazing to see the world through their eyes at every new stage of their development.
If you could share one piece of advice with your younger self, what would it be?
Live abroad!
What do you love most about working at The Field School?
When students have moments of discovery in the math classroom; cracking up about something silly together in advisory; geeking out over a cool math thing in the math office.
