Graduation is now less than two months away, but we still have many more seniors to feature! Meet Ilse. Ilse moved to the US from the UK in 11th grade, and now she’s heading to New York University in the fall to study media, culture, and communication. She says Field’s project-based approach to learning is what made her want to attend Field. During her time here, Ilse has been very involved in one of our music selectives and the Field Fashion Magazine. Keep reading to discover her favorite class at Field and the teacher who inspired her.
What major or subject area are you planning to pursue in college?
Media, Culture, and Communication
What grade level did you enter Field?
11th
Why did you choose to attend The Field School?
After moving from the UK to the US, I felt burnt out by the overwhelming number of tests and the high-pressure environment that seemed not just fostered but encouraged. Field helped me rediscover my love for learning through its emphasis on project-based education. Instead of cramming for exams, I found myself immersed in hands-on projects that challenged me to engage with the material on a deeper level and collaborate with my classmates in a more transferrable way.
What has been your favorite class at Field?
My favourite class was definitely English 11 with Kevin. Kevin has consistently inspired every student he's taught with his complete and utter joy for teaching and spreading his love for literature. Having engaged and excited teachers made all the difference in my learning experience at Field, as the passion they brought to the classroom reinforced how vital it is to learn from teachers who genuinely love what they do. His class reignited my own love for literature, as I feel like it had become jaded by the English education system.
What sports/clubs did you take part in at Field?
What has been your favorite memory at Field?
The senior trip! That time together really allowed us to bond as a class.
What will you miss most about Field?
I'll miss the sense of community here at Field. In such a short time, the relationships I've built (with both friends and teachers) have shaped me in ways I really didn't expect. The genuine support and care from those around me made me feel comfortable almost instantly, creating an environment where I could truly be myself. This community has made learning and growing here feel natural and fulfilling, instead of a chore. It's really rare to find a place where you feel so seen and valued.
What advice would you give future Field seniors?
Respect your teachers!
How did Field prepare you for your next chapter?
Field has fostered incredible student-teacher relationships, encouraging open communication in a way I never experienced in the UK, where a lack of understanding often made reaching out feel discouraged. At Field, teachers respond with genuine care and compassion, creating an environment where students feel heard and supported. This culture of openness makes it easier to ask questions and seek guidance when needed. The smaller class sizes further strengthen these connections, allowing for more personalised attention and meaningful discussions.
